Next vehicle purchase: Are the French ready to go electric?
22% of the French are considering going electric for their next vehicle purchase. In our last May research they were 19.7%. The increase may be explained by the planned end of combustion engine vehicle sales in Europe by 2035 as well as the cost of fuel.
Men seem more inclined to switch to electric vehicles (28.1%) and less undecided than women. One third of the interviewed women had no opinion and only 16.4% of them were considering buying an electric vehicle.
Awareness of the importance of reducing our CO2 emissions is more pronounced among the younger population. In first place, 31.3% of young people aged 18 to 24 say they are in favour of buying an electric vehicle. This figure is significantly higher than for all other age groups, where only 17.7% of 50 to 64 years old are in favour.
The first to opt for electric in their next purchase of a vehicle are the self-employed/senior executives, with a significant increase in one year, from 24.3% to 35.5%! Conversely, 45.8% of workers do not envisage this type of motorisation and almost 23% of them do certainly not envisage it.
It should also be noted that there is a clear correlation between the percentage of French people who plan to buy an electric vehicle and the size of the urban area. The development of recharging stations in large and medium-sized towns and cities, as well as short journeys, encourage acceptance among urban dwellers. For example, 24.3% of people living in towns with more than 100,000 inhabitants would consider the purchase of an electric vehicle and 31.4% would not. In less populated areas (fewer than 2,000 inhabitants) they represent 16.1% and nearly 45% respectively.
